2011

Cpl James Long, another worthy recipient of the 3rd Brigade Junior Leader Award, was recognized for his leadership and military ethos in October 2010.

Born in Melbourne, he joined the Army straight out of high school in 2001 and hasn’t looked back. His father, owner of a Melbourne-based newspaper, and mother – a nurse – are both very proud of their son who has followed in the footsteps of both their fathers who served in the 2nd AIF during World War Two; one in Cavalry and the other in Ordnance, both in Africa and then in New Guinea.

CPL Long, from the outset, wanted to be a rifleman and so when preferences were asked during his recruit training, that is what he requested. Unfortunately, he was posted to Transport Corps but his eagerness to be an Infantryman was noted and he was re-allocated to Infantry and undertook his initial training at the School of Infantry in Singleton, NSW whereupon he was posted to 1st Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment (1 RAR), and has been there ever since.

Since joining the 1st Battalion, CPL Long has undertaken two tours of East Timor, one of Tonga, one of Iraq and one of Afghanistan and up until last year, was a member of Pioneer Platoon, however his new role has proven more of a challenge. With many soldiers returning from active service with physical and non-physical injuries, Rehabilitation Platoon has been established within the Battalion to assist these soldiers with returning to Infantry service or – if necessary – discharging from the ADF. CPL Long is instrumental in assisting with administering these soldiers, training and mentoring and helping them find new lives inside and outside the Army.

Once again, CPL Long displays all the sterling characteristics of a soldier who is worthy of the 3rd Brigade Junior Leader award.
