Title to be released once complete

"This image is in the process of being created. Firstly, the image was drawn onto a canvas stretcher, gessoed with a tinted acrylic gesso using raw sienna and then the sky was blocked in.

I wasn't happy with the colour of the sky so I applied a wash of titanium white to give it a gradiated tone. With skies, the colour of the sky will change the closer you get to the horizon. This is because of the amount of particulates in the air such as dust, etc, that warps the colour. Usually, the colour will get lighter and/or dirtier.

The wash still didn't look right so I kept experimenting until I got a reasonable approximation to the colour I wanted.  I did the same with the background. Then it was time to get stuck into the face.

With portraits, I feel it's important to tackle the face first. It's no use doing a fantastic scene and background only to have the whole effect ruined by not being able to correctly render the face which, after all, is the most important part of a portrait.

Once I was satisfied that the face was reasonable, I then started the ancillary parts of the painting starting with the helmet and radio headset. Accuracy is everything when it comes to war art, I believe, so it was imperative that the technical detail was - and is - correct.
