SCENIC FLIGHT NO 4 - 5TH AIR FORCE MEMORIAL FLIGHT
The United States Army's 5th Air Force was formed to battle the Japanese in the
Pacific and was key in defending Australia. During the war, many aircraft from
the 5th were built, repaired, quartered and demolished in Townsville and
surrounding airfields. This tour is dedicated to our American friends who came
to Australia to help fight the enemy.
The 5th Air Force Memorial Scenic Flight starts at Townsville airport with a full safety brief and a brief on the aircraft and its history and what it can do.
We then depart the runway and airport environment and turn towards Kissing Point and The Strand taking the sights of North Ward, the beaches, Yarrawonga and the face of Castle Hill.
Then a cruise over the Townsville port and the city we then track along the Ross River towards Annandale and past Lavarack Barracks and Mt Stuart, past Cluden and then south past Stuart along the Kennedy Highway.
Soon, Ross River Dam appears and we track past the various airfields where the 5th Air Force had its various airfields for its pursuit (fighter) aircraft and its bombers. Down to the south at Reid River we head west through the gorges near the military training area and then head north towards Ross River Dam over the water to see the drowned valley and head towards the Ross River Dam wall. Down the Ross River past the Lavarack Military Training Area on the right and Kelso on the left as we approach Douglas, the University, Hospital and Riverway. then over Dairy Farmers Stadium and towards the Bohle before passing south of Mt Louisa and in for a landing back at the airport.
