Sikorsky S-70A-9 Black Hawk of 5th Aviation Regiment
280 x 355mm
The first aircraft I flew operationally in the Australian Army was the Black Hawk when I was posted to A Squadron, 5th Aviation Regiment.
It was a great aircraft; very versatile... and while I would go on to find my true aviation love, the CH-47D Chinook, the Black Hawk will always hold a special place in my heart.
Designed as a replacement for the venerable UH-1 Iroquois
(Huey), the design had to feature the capability that it could not be
brought down by a single bullet. As a result, the aircraft had double and
triple redundancy in many of its components and the manner in which it was
constructed meant that for field repairs, you could get away with having 12
tools to do most of the servicings.
