Sergeant Blaine Diddams
Oil paint on stretched canvas
I was asked to paint a portrait of Sergeant Blaine Diddams for the Special Air Service Regiment's collection. 'Didds' was a popular member of the Regiment and was killed in Afghanistan during a battle with the Taliban in July 2012.
In 2014 I commenced the work but, as many artists will attest to, time started slipping away and the deadline to complete it started to loom large. It's hard to juggle anything with two small children taking up your time, as any parent - let alone artist - can appreciate.
Fortunately, I worked only 10 minutes away from home, so each lunchtime I would go home - throw some paint onto a pallette - and do a half an hour's worth... and then put in a few hours in the evenings.
Here is an image of your's truly during one of my lunch breaks stealing home and painting. (Thanks to Sharon for taking the photo).
