When the decision was made to purchase the MRH90 helicopter for the Australian Defence Force, the concept was to acquire an aircraft that could be used by both Services that operated helicopters, that is the Army and the Navy.
The NATO Helicopter Industries (NHI) NH90 was the aircraft created to fulfil the same role for NATO countries. NHI was a collaboration between three European helicopter manufacturers with the concept being that only two variants would be developed: a tactical transport variant and a naval frigate version.
In order to operate the aircraft for the navy, No 808 Squadron, Fleet Air Arm, was re-raised and brought back onto the navy's commission in 2013.
No 808 squadron has a proud history having operated Hawker Sea Furies and Sea Venoms under the Australian flag.
