Portrait of an Infantry Officer - Major Simon Moore-Wilton, DSM
Oil on Auscam canvas
700mm x 1500mm
Commissioned by Chief of Army - Australian Army Art Collection
I was fortunate enough to attend a French language course at the Australian Defence Force School of Languages with a number of excellent officers and soldiers. One such officer was the then Captain Simon Moore-Wilton.
Later, he would deploy to Afghanistan as the Officer Commanding an infantry company and did so with extreme diligence and expertise, earning him a Military Medal.
When I create art, I try and fnd a theme that I can use and my favourite is to create modern day versions of artwork from previous conflicts. Ivor Hele is a famous Australian War Artist and he did a great sketch of a soldier in a slouch hat with a Thompson gun slung over his shoulder. Entitled, 'In From Patrol', (See the image below from the Australian War Memorial, Art22496) I asked Simon to stand in a similar pose and it is that pose that made it onto the canvas. I decided to use camouflaged canvas and painted onto that.
It is currently hanging outside the office of the Chief of Army.
