Helicopter Landing Site Safety Officer Course - Coming Soon!

Helicopters can land anywhere... or can they? With the use of helicopters in emergency service work becoming more and more commonplace, the risks to people on the ground—and to the aircrew operating to an unprepared landing site—become more complex. A safety coordinator that can prepare and keep safe a helicopter landing site (HLS) and assist aircrew and emergency service workers and members of the public becomes a valuable asset. The IPAS HLSSO course is an addendum to the Mission Crew course.

Helicopter Landing Site Safety Officer Course

Additional subjects to Mission Crew Course:

Assessing risk at a HLS

Trainee understands risks to persons on the ground and risks to approaching/departing aircraft and mitigates against those risks

Wires and obstacles to operating aircraft

Trainee learns about the architecture and logic of distribution and transmission lines and can assess their components and understands their placement and associated risks to aircraft and vehicles

Conducting a HLS reconaissance

Trainee uses tools to conduct a site reconnaissance including approach and departure paths, angles of approach/departure, judging obstacle heights, assessing surfaces, calculating slopes, identifying hazards, identifying paths to/from critical areas (eg accident site and the HLS)

Preparing a HLS

Trainee makes a HLS safe for personnel on the ground and for an approaching/departing aircraft

Marshalling aircraft

Trainee learns how to marshal helicopters to assist aircrew with avoiding obstacles or to coordinate landing positions for multiple aircraft

Basic aerodynamics for non-aviators

Trainee learns the operational limitations of helicopters with regard to aerodynamics, particularly hovering operations and IGE/OGE performance and take offs and landings and weight and balance

Aviation Teamwork

Trainee does team training with an emphasis on aviation-specific skills

Decision-making in complex environments
